Mental Health: What is it and Why is it so Important to Take Care of It?

We live in a world we couldn't have imagined a few years ago, and it is taking a heavy toll on our minds. That's why it is so important to talk about Mental Health.

The CDC defines Mental Health as the balanced mix of "our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices."

There are different kinds of factors that can affect or diminish our Mental Health, mainly biological ones (like everyone's own chemistry or genes), our life experiences (such as abusive or traumatic events) and, of course, each one's family history of mental health problems.

Due to these circumstances, there's no unique way of treating or reaching Mental Health for everyone, but we know some general guidelines that can help us all achieve the goal of taking care of our minds.

It all starts with simple, but super effective, actions that allow us to fulfill basic physiological needs, like getting enough sleep and staying physically active through sports or game activities.

The social component is also key when looking after Mental Health: connecting with and being helpful to others can also improve our minds' well-being.

Then, there are some more specific actions that depend on one's needs: developing coping skills, maintaining a positive attitude or even getting professional help when it's required.

It's important to remind ourselves that there's always someone willing to listen and talk to us. The U.S Department of Health & Human Services has several resources in case you or someone you know needs help.

In 2022, the World Health Organization has set October 10th as World Mental Health Day in order "to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health".
